Government help for divorcing couples in dispute over arrangements for children

19th January 2015 by

As one of the top divorce law firms in Brighton, Healys LLP helps clients through many of the issues arising from divorce and relationship breakdown, including financial settlements on divorce and contentious disputes regarding arrangements for children.

Whilst our divorce lawyers are available to represent clients during litigation surrounding children disputes, it is generally held that avoiding court hearings is best in children matters, so we always do our best to arrange mediation and/or counselling for parents who cannot agree the financial and parenting arrangements for their children.

Funding for projects helping couples sort out arrangements for children

In December 2013 the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) announced a major funding initiative for ten new projects which help couples resolve disputes regarding arrangements for children.

The multi-million pound investment was introduced to help the schemes as they aimed to help families nationwide resolve their conflicts without the need to go to hearings in the family courts.

Steve Webb, Minister for Work and Pensions said, “These groundbreaking projects find new ways to help separated couples put aside their differences, so they can agree their own maintenance payments and parenting arrangements in the best interests of their children.

“We know it can be tough to negotiate with an ex-partner, but we want to help more parents break free of deadlock and sort out their own arrangements, rather than fall back on the state or resort to the courts.”

The funded projects included: Children 1st in Scotland, Family Lives helping Muslim families in Leicester, Waltham Forest and Gloucestershire, Family Matters Mediate Ltd in Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, Headland Future in the Tees valley, Mediation Now Ltd in Portsmouth and Hampshire, and various projects across the country.
